Prince Charming glanced nervously around the room. The gaggle of princesses would not leave him alone, and there seemed no way to escape the Castle of Airs.

Suddenly a deep voice called out, "Cupcakes!" A tall, armored figure strode up to Prince Charming's moat of adorers, holding a tray of exquisite cupcakes in one hand. It was Sunclank the Impeccable, a renowned hero. The princesses squealed with delight and moved towards the tray. Prince Charming wondered if he could make a break for it. If only he had not been made to wear such ridiculous jeweled slippers.

A moment later, when the princesses were all busy licking their fingers, Sunclank took a pair or running shoes from behind his back and handed them to the prince while whispering, "I left the front doors open". Prince Charming changed footwear in a flash and sprinted from the castle.

Sunclank glanced at the crowd of beautiful princesses eating cupcakes. He really felt like taking a break: even a crowd of ugly princesses with cupcakes would provide a nice respite. But other quests needed solving.

"Sorry ladies," he declared, whisking away with the tray of cupcakes. He needed the remaining ones to mask his scent as he snuck into the evil witch's house made of gingerbread and candies.

Outside the Castle of Airs the heroic Sunclank whistled for his giant riding crab. Hopefully he could catch up with Prince Charming and convince the prince to accompany him to the hut where the Wicked Wench of the West lived. Sunclank knew from an oracle's prophecy that the prince's charms would melt the wench's heart if he could take them both to the city of Padua. It should be an easy task. Unless the Dwarven Mining-Smithing Authority declared war on the Fairly Fanatical Friends of the Forest--an event that had seemed eminent for months.

In Chessboard Heroism you are a hero or heroine, trying to do heroic things before wars break out and your career options are reduced to boring military service. You long to solve real quests: saving people who need rescuing, finding lost magical items, fighting wild monsters, etc. But time is running out! Cards detailing quests cover a chessboard's squares. Solve the quests faster than your opponents while cooperatively maintaining the political stalemate or the game ends! And watch out for the randomly wandering dragon!

If you do not already own miniatures, you can find some free paper ones at this web site by P.D. Magnus.
